The defensive co-ordinator for the Saint Marys Huskies the past two seasons, McLean was in charge of the top defence in the CIS last year, helping the team advance to the Vanier Cup. Prior to his time at Saint Marys, McLean won two consecutive national junior championships as the head coach of the Edmonton Huskies. He has brought Beau Mirau, his successor at Edmonton, into the fold as the offensive co-ordinator. McLean becomes the third coach at York in the past year. Interim head coach Andy McEvoy replaced Tom Gretes in June 2007 and then McLean came on board in June. McLean has brought 46 first-year players into camp in an effort to rebuild a team that has missed the playoffs the past three seasons. While 13 starters are back, every spot on the team is up for grabs. The masters student has thrown for 4,379 yards and 26 touchdowns in his career. He needs to throw for less than 1,000 more yards to overtake Billy Barbosa (5,324) as the schools career leading passer. RB Jason Marshall (Barrie) is a third-year player that is expected to handle the bulk of the backfield duties for the Lions. Last season, Marshall led the Lions in rushing with 137 yards. OT Patrick Assinck (Peterborough) is one of four returning starters on the offensive line. This year, Assinck represented York at the CIS East-West Bowl. Key recruits: QB Nick Coutu (St. Catharines) is a highly-regarded quarterback out of the Niagara Spears Ontario Varsity Football League program. Coutu led the Sir Winston Churchill high school team to regional championships in 2003, as a starter in Grade 9, and in 2007. LT Chris Pitman (Toronto) won a Metro Bowl with Richview in high school. He is a transfer from the University of Waterloo. Key losses: OL Dave Gauer (Mississauga) attended the 2007 CIS East-West Bowl for York and was invited to the 2008 CFL evaluation camp. WR Steven Hughes (Ottawa) led the Lions with 593 receiving yards last season. His 44 catches set a York record for receptions in a season. Defence Key returning players: DE David Mills (Abbotsford, B.C.) moves to the defensive line this year after spending his first four years as a defensive back. Mills led the team with three interceptions last season. DE/LB Chris Ross (Toronto) is one of the leaders on the team as he enters his fourth year. Ross had 10 tackles and a sack last season. DL Paul Fenech (Brampton) is a 6-foot, 319-pounder who will be expected to clog up running lanes for the Lions. Fenech had eight tackles and a sack last year. Key recruits: LB Rob Thomas (Queensville) was a two-time York Region champion at Huron Heights. He was the defensive player of the year with his club team, the York Simcoe Bucs. DB Bobby Hatanaka (Toronto) is the son of ex-York star receiver and CFLer Bill Hatanaka. Hatanaka is a transfer from the University of Western Ontario comes to Concordia out of John Abbott College and Loyola High School. Coach McGrath says he's already capable of playing at the university level. Key losses: DB/LB Jared Corbin (Waterdown) tied for fourth on the team with 22 tackles last season. He also had one sack. FS Robin Legault (Bolton) was a team captain last year. He was second on the team with 34 tackles and also had a sack and an interception.
