Recruiting master and head coach David Johnson (second year) finally had a full off-season to pull together a high calibre collection of recruits, many of whom are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. In 2007, the Clan struggled out of the gate, however had their best performance of the season in week eight against the eventual Vanier Cup Champions from Manitoba. Holding the Bisons to just 22 points, SFUs defence, coached by CIS legend Lou DesLauriers, demonstrated they belonged in a tough Canada West conference. This year the Clan get on the field early, with two games before September 1, and the team would love to have the 25-game losing streak off their collective backs after a week one showdown with their traditional rivals from the University of British Columbia. Quote from head coach: We are very excited to get this season underway, we have a real opportunity to shine this year and surprise some people. Our kids worked their tails off in the off-season, and because of that hard work they deserve to be rewarded with a victory. Head Coach: David Johnson - Number of seasons as head coach with team (including 2008): Two - Number of seasons as head coach in CIS (including 2008): Three - Career regular season record with team: 0-8 - Career regular season record in CIS: 6-10 - Career overall record with team (reg. season & playoffs only): 0-8 - Career overall record in CIS (reg. season & playoffs only): 7-11 Offence Key returning players: Fullback Josh Havey (Winnipeg, MB, fifth year) will be one of the offensive leaders on the Clan. Literally the strongest player on the team, Havey missed portions of the 2007 season due to injury, however returns in 2008 with a clean bill of health. Havey may spell at tailback; however his primary duties will be at the full or H-back position. Center Bryan Thiessen (Abbotsford, B.C.), fifth year) had another impressive off-season in preparation for 2008. Thiessen has played all over the offensive line, particularly during each of the last two seasons, however is penciled in to start at center on opening day. Speedy Spencer Watt (North Vancouver, B.C., third year) will look to take the reigns from Aaron Hargreaves as the Clans go to receiver. Watt, a transfer from Minot State, displayed quickness in his first season with the Clan, and was the third leading receiver on the team in 2007 with 194 yards. Key recruits (or newcomers: transfers): Former St. Thomas More and University of Minnesota-Duluth star Marek Seta has transferred to SFU. The stud running back was penciled in as the preseason favourite to start at tailback, however has been battling injuries during training camp. On the offensive line, former Victoria Rebel junior football star and right guard Brent Robbins blocking style has been described by the coaching staff as how a bear mauls a poodle. At 66 and 330 pounds, Robbins is expected to be a run blocking workhorse. In keeping with the Clans newfound tradition of bringing in players from overseas, Mathis Baumbach (Dusseldorf, Germany) brings size at 66 and speed to the receiving corps. Based on the recommendation of an acquaintance, Baumbach contacted the Simon Fraser coaching staff, and has the potential to see significant playing time in only his first season in the CIS. Key losses: Wide receiver Aaron Hargreaves, a two-time Canada West All-Star, was drafted in the second round of the CFL Draft by Winnipeg, and has earned an important role on the Blue Bombers special teams, and will not be returning to the Clan for 2008. Quarterback Jason Marshall graduated from SFU and was given a tryout with the Edmonton Eskimos. Marshall is now pursuing his dream of playing for the Canadian National Rugby Team. Receiver and kicker Chris Passaglia also graduated, meaning there will be an open competition for kicking and punting duties. Defence Key returning players: Anthony DesLauriers (Surrey, B.C., third year) will enter his second season with the Clan as SFUs starting cornerback. An East West Bowl selection, DesLauriers had four interceptions in 2007, and is the son of former CFLer and current Clan defensive coordinator Lou DesLauriers. Free safety Ray Wladichuk (Vernon, B.C., third year) had a breakout season in 2007. A converted wideout, the athletic Wladichuk has pulled double-duty as a starter in the secondary as well as a return man. Brian Ridgeway (Grande Prairie, AB, third year) enters his second season with SFU, and alongside Mark Bailey (Surrey, B.C., second year), will anchor the linebacking corps. Key recruits (or newcomers: transfers): While not technically a newcomer, big John Reeves (New Westminster, B.C.) has been moved from the offensive line, and is penciled in as the Clans starting defensive tackle. Reeves was the second strongest player on the Clan during testing, and is a beast at 63, 330 pounds. At nose tackle, Dustin Heywood (Innisfail, AB) has a motor, and could see significant playing time after a successful junior career with the Regina Thunder.
