Returning to the AUS championship game last year and having a tough loss to Acadia, has the fire burning high to get back on top of the AUS and beyond. The past year was about change this upcoming year is about stability. With 67 returning players and a coaching staff solidified, we believe we have the makings of a team to a make serious run at the championship. The graduation of veterans Tyler Powel, Bill Robinson, Andre Knights, Eric Ince and Alain Lefebvre will be difficult, but we also believe that we have some new faces to that will step up and take on leadership roles on this team. Leadership is the key to all success and we feel that returning captains, Tim St. Pierre, Jacques Lumbala, Derek Weber and Clayton Chiurka will provide that for the 2007 edition of the Huskies. Defensively this group should be outstanding with both size and speed. The defensive line is led by Clayton Chiurka (2nd team All-Canadian) and AUS All-Star Brent Shabley. With the return of Matt Hunter, Ian Shaw, Andrew Dorey and Austin McLennan this group brings another year of experience to the table. Newcomers Matt Lemay and Dan Schutte as well as the return of Andrew Paopao make this one of the most competitive units on the team. At linebacker the graduation of two starters has allowed some veterans to step up and take on more active roles with the team. Tim St. Pierre (AUS All-Star) will lead the group along with Andrew King, Ryan Benjamin, Reed Anderson, Sean McCarthy and Phil Cormier. Look for heavy competition from Leroy Fontaine, Antonio Ridley and two local players Mark Baxter and Chris MacDonald. In the secondary all 5 starters return led by 2nd team All-Canadian Jeff Zelinski. The corners will be manned by Jeff and Marc Beswick while Tyrone Roue. Al Birthwright will play the half positions with future AUS All-Star Saleem Borhot at free safety. Returning vets, Nial Both, Billy Dee Johnson, Mike Jack and Andrew Pye will battle with newcomers Jarret Laycock, Britton Moultry and Bryce Fisher. Offensively this group is as talented as weve seen in 3 or 4 years. It has a combination of a veteran offensive line and speed and athleticism at the skill positions. The O-Line will be led by Derek Weber, Thomas Elinsky and Isaac Robinson (all AUS All-Stars last year). Brian Jordan, Tommy Gibbons, Adam Babaoulas, Geoff Zochodne along with transfers Kyl McNeil and Kenny Holownia, make this a very deep offensive line. Their job will be to protect Eric Glavic at QB this year. After a successful first season Eric will be handed the reigns to lead the Huskies back to the top. His ability to run will put great pressure on the opponents defense this year. He will be backed by Ted Abraham, Mike McNair and Pat Hooey and newcomer Arland Matthews. An area where we recruited heavily was at the running back position. Jacques returning along with Tyler Schussler and Alistair Blair will be battling for playing time with Glen Downs (returning from knee surgery) and Jon Shreve, Mich Okelu and Craig Leger. The FB spot has also been helped with the addition of AJ Grondin. Going into camp 20 receivers will be fighting for spots. Sean White, Ryean Warburton, Darcy Brown, David Swasey and offensive MVP Carl Hardwick will be contending with Aaron Racioppa, Charlie Kitts, Joe Doherty, Kyle Drake and the return of Fraser ONeill. The kicking game will once again be placed in the hands of the AUS Rookie of the Year Justin Palardy. He will go into the year handling both the punting and kicking duties. Quote from head coach: The 2007 edition of the Huskies carries the theme of building on the success of the 2006 campaign. With many returning players and a fresh group of athletes coming to camp, we are very excited about the upcoming season and the possibilities of where it may lead. The conference itself should be very tight, so the first few weeks of the season will determine a lot about where this team will be come week four.
