After rolling through another 8-0 regular season record in 2007, the Herd followed up great expectations with a record-breaking four game playoff run (winning by an average of 38 to 11 while setting a new team record with 52 points in a playoff match) which culminated with a successful 28-14 championship win over the St. Marys Huskies in the Vanier Cup held in Toronto on November 23, 2007. The Bisons etched their name in the CIS record book as they ended the 2007 season with a perfect 12-0 record. The last team to end a CIS football season undefeated was Laurier (12-0) in 2005. In addition, the Bisons secured the 38th CIS title by a Bisons team and captured the Vanier Cup for the first time since the back-to-back Championship teams in 1970 and 1969. The Herd was the first Canada West team to hold the Vanier Cup since Saskatchewan in 1998 (24-17 over Concordia). The challenge for the upcoming campaign will be to successfully defend the Vanier Cup despite the squad losing a number of starters on both sides of the ball. On the offense, there will be four starters not returning from last season while on the defence, there will be a startling nine starters not returning because of either graduation or moving onto a CFL career. Bison football head coach Brian Dobie stated that this anomaly of loss of starters was a by-product of building towards a championship season and now regrouping to continue the winning traditions with a new crop of starters. For the Manitoba Bisons football squad, the team will have to absorb the losses of some key starters and players on both side of the ball. The departures on defensive start with the ends as both Justins Justin Shaw (BC Lions) and Canada West Outstanding Lineman of the Year Justin Cooper (Edmonton Eskimos) have graduated to the CFL. Along with them, CIS All-Canadian defensive back Brady Browne (BC Lions) is now in the CFL with CIS All-Canadian nose tackle Simon Patrick, linebackers Jeff Alamolhoda and Mike Kissinger, safety Bob Reist, halfback Eric Gustafson and Vanier Cup MVP cornerback Mike Howard graduating from school. On the offensive side, both Darryl Conrad and Ryan Karhut left the O-Line for the CFL, offensive lineman Trevor Lefrancois will not return and receiver/punt returner Brad Black, fullback Neil Fulgueras and running back Karim Lowen finished all five years of their eligibility. Manitoba will have a strong contingent on offense with returning Vanier Cup offense MVP and starting quarterback John Makie back at the pivot position to add to his impressive resume. Makie has not lost a game as a Bison starter in two consecutive regular seasons (16-0). Running back and Canada West All-Star Matt Henry is scheduled to make the field again after a horrific leg injury suffered in the CIS championship. Returning starters Terry Firr, Randy Simmons and Simon Blaszczak will bolster the receiver core. The main changes will be on the offensive line, which lost two starters to the CFL. Also returning is kicker Scott Dixon who set team records in placekicking last season. On defence, defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu (who was drafted by Winnipeg Blue Bombers), linebacker Jim Jeavons and Kenton Onofrychuk are the only starters returning from last season. They will be joined by a solid group of defenders who move from back up to starting roles. The loss of all four Canada West All-Stars from last season will be counter-balanced with new recruits who will solidify one of the stronger defences in the nation. Quote from head coach: Head coach Brian Dobie enters his 13th season with Bisons and reflected on the 2008 campaign. We are looking forward to the season. Every year is a different entity and this year presents an opportunity that is extremely unique. It is definitely a great honour to be CIS champs and to have the chance to hold onto to the title.
