After putting together of its most successful seasons of late in 2007, going 4-4 in the regular season, winning two playoff games the team then dropped the Yates Cup final to the Western Mustangs at home. With a more experienced and mature group on the field this season the team’s chances to return to the Championships looks good. Guelph has eleven returning starters on offense including 2007 second team all-stars, quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) and running back Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.). Dunk, has emerged as a dual threat for the Gryphon offense by throwing for over 1700 yards and rushing 450 yards last season. Last year he proved to be a constant threat to score by throwing 17 touchdowns and rushing for two more. The defense that led the OUA in run-defense and stopped many great opponents took the brunt of the losses to the team this year, losing three key starters Chris Decker, Chris Hladich and Pete De Gouw. The linebacking core will see the most highly contested positional battles throughout training camp. Tag Russell (Burlington, Ont.) and Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) are the only returning linebackers that saw substantial playing time last season. The special teams unit should pick right up where it left off last season led by veteran kicker Rob Maver. Maver is back to handle both the punting and kicking responsibilities. Overall, the Gryphons are hopeful that this year’s recruiting class with contribute in a number of positions and most importantly on the defensive side of the ball. Quote from head coach: On the 2008 team “We’re very excited about this season, we have a good solid recruiting class and improved our depth at a lot of positions and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. We’re looking forward to building on last years success” On last years turn-around season “The excitement of last year’s playoff run has injected enthusiasm towards this season. Nothing like winning helps you improve in all facets including recruiting.” On training camp “I think our guys are more confident and excited heading into camp this year. A year ago we entered the season with a number of players who had never taken a University snap and many of those players got a chance to play last season and will lean on that experience has they head into this year.” Head Coach: Kyle Walters - Number of seasons as head coach with team (including 2008): 3 - Number of seasons as head coach in CIS (including 2008): 3 - Career regular season record with team: 6-10 - Career regular season record in CIS: 6-10 - Career overall record with team (reg. season & playoffs only): 8-11 - Career overall record in CIS (reg. season & playoffs only): 8-11 OFFENCE Key returning players: QB Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) returns for his 4th season at the controls of the Gryphon offense. He was a 2007 second team OUA All-Star finishing the season fifth in the OUA passing for 1784 yards, with 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions. Last year he became the University of Guelph leader in career offensive yards and career passing yards. RB Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) returns for a 3rd season. Last season he finished fourth in the province with 794 rushing yards, with five touchdowns, as well as eight receiving touchdowns and 376 receiving yards. He was named a second team OUA All-Star. P/K Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) enters his 3rd season, his first two saw him earn OUA All-Star status as a punter. His 15 field goals in 2007 set a Gryphon record and his 40.7 punting average was the second best season ever by a Gryphon. FB Graeme Reed (Barrie, Ont.) returns for his 5th and final season, giving the offensive backfield experience and talent. Key recruits: WR Nathan Lane (Hamilton, Ont.) was a star high school player and should be expected to fight for a starting receiver position as a rookie LB Jake Reinhart (Guelph, Ont.) was the league’s player of the year last season in Guelph playing for Guelph C.V.I high school. He was a highly recruited rookie, is a very talented player starting high school as a linebacker and finishing as a quarterback. He also played for the Twin City Predators out of Kitchener, Ont. Key losses: WR Lorne Foster DEFENCE Key returning players: LB Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) was second on the team in sacks last season with 4.5 and also recorded 28 solo tackles. He plays a big role in the Gryphon defence. DB Sean Riley (Burlington, Ont.) was an OUA All-star last season. He’s expected to continue being a standout player on defense. He recorded eleven solo tackles and one interception last season. DB Jamie Shaw (Mississauga, Ont.) has played QB and WR before moving to DB last season. With a great understanding of the defensive schemes he is able to take control of the secondary from the free safety position. LB Tag Russell (Burlington, Ont.) is back for his 5th and final season with the team. Last year he was second on the team with 35 solo tackles and also near the top of the defense in sacks (1.5) and interceptions (1). As an outside linebacker he is a valuable component of the pass and run defense. Key recruits: LB James Bookman (Toronto, Ont.) from St. Michaels high school earned MVP honours at the Metro Bowl. DB Jordan Duncan (Grimsby, Ont.) from Blessed Trinity was his team MVP last year and played on the Niagara Spears of the Ontario Varsity Football League.
