Head Coach: Gerry McGrath - Number of seasons as head coach with team (including 2008): 9 - Number of seasons as head coach in CIS (including 2008): 9 - Career regular season record with team: 41-23 - Career regular season record in CIS: 41-23 - Career overall record with team (reg. season & playoffs only): 46-30 - Career overall record in CIS (reg. season & playoffs only): 46-30 2008 Overview There’s an air quiet of optimism surrounding the 2008 Concordia Stingers football program, but at the same time there are some big question marks going into the start of the season. On defence, the front seven is in great shape and some say it is even stronger than the dominating units powered by the likes of LB Patrick Donovan (President’s Trophy 2005, 2006), LB Mickey Donovan (President’s Trophy 2004) and DT Sammy Taulealea. It is an experienced group; four of the seven are fifth-year veterans. It will be very hard to establish a running game against the Stingers. “We’re going to play aggressive and take advantage of our strength in the front,” says defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney. “We’ve had a strong year of recruiting at defensive back. It will be interesting to watch their progress.” The question marks all hang over the defensive backfield where youth and athleticism are the name of the game. How fast can the younger members adapt to the CIS level? Who will step up to fill the spot left by the graduation of three-time all-Canadian halfback Sammy Okpro? (now with Edmonton Eskimos). Head coach Gerry McGrath is expecting to put “an explosive” offence on the field in 2008. A big, veteran offensive line will give him some latitude. Quarterback Liam Mahoney, the 2008 CIS rookie of the year, is back at the helm. Since he only ran the team for four games last season, it will be interesting to see what he can do with a whole season to work with. McGrath also has a lot of talent at the skilled positions. “We’ll be physical,” says the veteran coach. “We have a lot of weapons, especially at receiver. The offensive line is outstanding. Games are won and lost along the line and we will be very good on both sides of the ball. “I expect we will run a balanced attack. I’m really excited about the crew we have.” On special teams, all-star kicker Rene Parades is back for his second year. J.P. Binette is back at long snap. Some new faces will get playing time on returns. Overall, 19 of 25 starters (includes kicker) are back in the fold. Even with some changes, McGrath feels the team has reloaded and is ready to fight for the top spot in Quebec. Offence Key returning players: OG Kristian Matte (St. Hubert, Que.) is a third-year player. He brings a lot of size (6’4”, 308 lbs.) and leadership to the line. He was named the Stingers’ outstanding lineman at their 2007 football banquet. SB Cory Watson (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.) is a third-year inside receiver. He led the Stingers with 24 receptions for 366 yards and five touchdowns in 2007. Watson will lead a talented group of receivers for which head coach Gerry McGrath has high expectations. QB Liam Mahoney (Lachine, Que.) is a second-year quarterback who was the 2007 CIS rookie of the year. In just over four games he completed 60.2 per cent of his passes and threw for six touchdowns. He also rushed for more than 600 yards, averaging more than eight yards a carry. With veteran Rob Mackay on the sidelines this season, Mahoney is the uncontested starter. SB Corey Greenaway (Vaudreuil, Que.) is a third-year player who will move from running back to receiver this season. The Stingers hope to exploit his speed and good hands. McGrath has a lot of faith in Greenaway who was MVP offence of his CEGEP team in 2005 (Edouard Montpetit) and a key player for Team Canada in 2006. Key recruits: FB Devon Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich.) is a big, strong back who is transferring from Ferris State. He was second team all-conference at Troy High School in Michigan. He is the son of Devon Mitchell Sr., a defensive back with the Detroit Lions (1986-’88). OG Cory Newman (Chтteauguay, Que.) is McGrath’s prize recruit on the offensive line. The six-foot-two, 344-pounder comes out of Loomis Chaffee Prep School. He won the Canada Cup as a member of Team Quebec in 2006. WR Tony Testa (Montreal) was with Universitщ de Montrщal in 2006 but sat out in 2007. During that time he played with the St. Leonard Cougars in the CJFL, earning all-Canadian honors and being named the outstanding offensive player in junior football. He was a captain with the Cougars in 2007. Key losses: QB Rob Mackay (Oakville, Ont.) the starting quarterback at the beginning of the 2007 season will be side-lined with an injury this season. He will be back in school and will mentor Concordia’s young pivots in 2008. SB Nick Scissons (Ottawa) finished his five years of eligibility in 2007. He caught 18 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns last year. He led the QSSF in receiving in 2004. His leadership is irreplaceable. He is now employed by the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. OT Keith Dauper (Dublin, Ohio) has used his five years of eligibility. He was a 2006 second team all-Canadian and a Quebec all-star in 2005, ’06 and ’07. He played arena football last spring. Defence Key returning players: DT Maurice Forbes (Toronto) was one of McGrath’s top recruits in 2007. He had 14 solo tackles, nine assists and a sack in his first year. He has already garnered a lot of attention from the pro scouts. With Lincoln Bennett at the other tackle position, the line is impenetrable. Forbes was co-winner of the outstanding defensive rookie on the Stingers last year. LB Cory Greenwood (Kingston, Ont.) is another key piece to a very accomplished defensive unit. The 2007 Quebec all-star will play middle linebacker and is every bit as talented as the famous President’s Trophy-winning Donovan brothers. The third-year player will be a legitimate contender for outstanding defensive player in the conference. He led the Stingers in tackles last year with 41 solos and 20 assists in 2007. He also has the professional scouts scrutinizing his every move. S Nicholas Arsenault-Hum (Delson, Que.) is also a young player that will shoulder a lot of responsibility this season. He’ll use his athleticism and intelligence to lead a young group of defensive backs. As a rookie starter in 2007, he collected nine solo tackles, three assists and one interception. Along with Maurice Forbes, he was co-winner of the Stingers’ outstanding defensive rookie in 2007. Key recruits: LB Ricky Zeiba (Montreal) comes to Concordia from Vanier College where he was the Cheetahs’ 2006 defensive MVP. He was a team captain and a member Vanier’s 2006 Bol d’Or championship team. An all-round athlete, he was also an accomplished competitive swimmer for many years. CB Jamie Pau (Ottawa) is an accomplished defensive back with experience in the EFL (Deacon Demons) and QJFL (Ottawa Sooners). He was a league all-star with the latter. He will be working hard to gain playing time at the open cornerback position. HB Christian Walcott (Markham, Ont.) was a standout at Birchmont Park CI, where he was the Panthers’ MVP defence. Walcott has impressive leadership potential. He was a captain at Birchmont for four years. He leads a strong group of first-year defensive backs that includes Gracia Mwenbo from Vieux-Montrщal. Key losses: HB Sammy Okpro (Pierrefonds, Que.) completed a four-year career with the Stingers. The three-time all-Canadian and Quebec league all-star was drafted 25th overall in the 2008 CFL draft by the Edmonton Eskimos. He has stuck with the Eskimos, enjoying spot duty on special teams.
