General Write-Up: There’s an air of optimism surrounding the 2007 Concordia Stingers football program, but at the same time there are some big question marks hovering around the team. The defence is in great shape and some say its even stronger than the dominating unit powered by two-time President’s Trophy recipient Patrick Donovan, the middle linebacker from Laconia, N.H. who graduated last spring. There’s lots of talent across the board and anyone of half a dozen players could be in all-Canadian contention this season. The offence is going through a transition with the graduation of 2005 Hec Crighton nominee Scott Syvret at quarterback and third-year man Rob Mackay taking over. Head coach Gerry McGrath knows his team is in good hands, but Mackay still has to go out and prove he can get the job done. Special teams will also be very different with the graduation of two-time all-Canadian punter Mike Renaud and the departure of 2005 all-Canadian kicker Warren Kean who is currently in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos. Who will handle the duties? Can the newcomers perform under pressure in the tough QUFL? There are no clear answers this early in the season. Overall, 18 of 24 starters are back in the fold. Even with significant change, McGrath feels the team has reloaded and is ready to fight for the top spot in Quebec. Quote from head coach: Gerry McGrath on the QBs Rob Mackay and Liam Mahoney: “I’m excited about the quarterback situation. Both Rob and Liam are great young kids. They’re athletic, fast, intelligent and great leaders.” McGrath on the offence: “We’ll be balanced as usual. We have a good mix of young talent and capable veterans. The offensive line is as good as any we’ve had since I’ve been here. I’m eager to see the tailbacks. We have three pretty good ones in Corey Greenaway, Cedric Ferdinand and Edem Nyamadi. I can’t wait to see these guys play. At receiver, we have more speed than last year.” Defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney: “Our goal this year is to be the No. 1 defence in the CIS. He was a second team CIS all-Canadian in 2006. He is a CIS academic all-Canadian as well. He brings a lot of size (6’7”, 310 lbs.) and leadership to the line. SB Nick Scissions (Ottawa) is a fifth-year inside receiver who hopes to lead the QUFL in receiving as he did in 2004 when he caught 33 passes for 443 yards and two TDs. Last year he struggled some (16 receptions, 271 yards and three TDs) but is having a good camp. QB Rob Mackay (Oakville, Ont.) is a third-year quarterback who steps into the starter’s role after two years of apprenticing behind 2005 Hec Crighton nominee Scott Syvret. Expectations are high for the young, athletic pivot. In his backup role last season he completed 29 of 57 passes for 509 yards, four TDs and four interceptions. RB Corey Greenaway (Brossard, Que.) is a second-year running back who will start in place of Andrew Hamilton now with the Montreal Alouettes. These are big cleats to fill but Gerry McGrath has a lot of faith in Greenaway who was MVP offence of his CEGEP team in 2005 (Edouard Montpetit) and a key player for Team Canada in 2006. Key recruits (or newcomers: transfers): C Anthony Barrette (Verdun, Que.) is a versatile lineman who is expected to see a lot of playing time as a rookie. At six foot five and 307 pounds he adds some good size to the line. He was a Quebec CEGEP all-star in 2005 and 2006 with the Vanier Cheetahs. He was a member of Team Canada in 2006. QB Liam Mahoney (Lachine, Que.) is a highly sought-after pivot out of Vanier College. In 2006, he led the Cheetahs to the Bol d’Or championship and was the Quebec CEGEP league all-star quarterback. He was also Male Athlete of the Year at Vanier. With the Cheetahs last season he completed 96 of 204 passes for 1516 yards, six interceptions and 15 touchdowns. Key losses: QB Scott Syvret (Kirkland, Que.) leaves Concordia after four great seasons, including an impressive campaign in 2005 that saw him named outstanding offensive player in the QUFL, a finalist for the Hec Crighton Trophy and CIS second team all-Canadian. Last season, he completed 88 of 155 passes for 1240 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. RB Andrew Hamilton (Montreal) is now on the Montreal Alouettes practice roster. He signed as a free agent last November. Hamilton was outstanding in his only season with the Stingers. He carried the ball 83 times for 694 yards and five touchdowns. Defence Key returning players: LB Nathan Agadzi (Brampton, Ont.) is an extremely talented linebacker who will play in the middle where the Donovan brothers – Patrick (2005 & 2006) and Mickey (2004) have won President’s trophies the last three seasons. Now in his fourth season, he has been overshadowed by the Donovans and struggled with injuries but is expected to emerge as a serious threat and potential all-Canadian. He will be counted on heavily to be a leader in the locker room and on the field. LB Cory Greenwood (Kingston, Ont.) is another key piece to a very talented defensive unit. He will play weak-side linebacker and is every bit as talented at the Donovans. The second-year player will emerge as another superstar linebacker for the Stingers. He’s exceptionally strong and fast. He ran one of the top 40 times on the team. Greenwood had 20 solo tackles and 10 assists in seven games last season. HB Sammy Okpro (Pierrefonds, Que.) is back for a fourth season at halfback. The two-time all-Canadian and Quebec league all-star is looking to make a big impact this season. He will be draft eligible this spring and has one more season to impress the CFL scouts. Okpro led the QUFL in tackling with 44 last season. He also had three interceptions. CB Sylvester Sarfo (Ottawa) emerged last year as an all-star cornerback. Now in his fourth season, he will be a leader – along with Okpro – in the backfield. Last year, he collected 17 solo tackles, four assisted tackles and two interceptions. Key recruits (or newcomers: transfers: DT Maurice Forbes (Toronto) was an exceptional player with the Mississauga Warriors of the OVFL and St. Francis Xavier Secondary the last two years. In the OVFL he was an all-star and Lineman of the Year in 2005 and 2006. He was MVP at St. Francis Xavier last year. He was also a standout with the 2007 edition of Team Canada. DB Nicholas Arsenault-Hum (Delson, Que.) comes to Concordia from CEGEP Vieux Montreal where he won a Bol d’Or championship in 2005. He was a member of Team Canada in 2007. He was also an all-star when he played in the Quebec midget football league with the St. Hubert Rebelles in 2004. Key losses: MLB Patrick Donovan (Laconia N.H.) has completed five years of eligibility. He was the President Trophy winner as the outstanding defensive player in the CIS in both 2005 and 2006. He was also a finalist for the prestigious BLG award last spring. He had 27 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles in six games. CB Moe Sidibe (Toronto) will be missed in the secondary where he was a QUFL all-star and CIS all-Canadian in 2005 and 2006. He was rarely tested in his five games last season, recording four solo tackles, four assisted tackles and two interceptions. DT Mark Kang (Pointe Claire, Que.), a tough and dogged-competitor, finished up his five years of eligibility as a QUFL all-star. In 2006 he had 14 solo tackles and seven assisted tackles.
