The powerful Golden Gaels came back however with a 23-0 run. They took a 9-8 lead into the locker room at halftime on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Denison to Craig Spear and a 31-yard field goal by Napoli. The extra-point attempt was blocked following Spear's major.
