Public commendations for superior accomplishments/performances acknowledges the efforts of the recipients, may serve to motivate others to aspire to similar success, and tends to reinforce a fundamental premise of universities, eg. the pursuit of excellence. 60.10.2 Outstanding accomplishments which exemplify the ideals and purposes of interuniversity athletics and amateur sport may also be officially recognized by public commendations by CIS . Policies and Procedures 60 Honours Policy Number: 60.20 Name: Standard Championship Awards Origin: Sport Committee Approved: June 1998 Approval Process: Board of Directors Revision Date(s): June 2003, April 2004, June 2005, June 2007 60.20.1 GENERAL Standard The following Championship Awards are those awards that shall be standard for all Canadian Interuniversity Sport CIS sports and be presented on an annual basis at each Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS National Championships: and funded by Canadian Interuniversity Sport. They are as follows: 60.20.1.1.1 Trophy to the winning team (to display for one year). 60.20.1.1.22 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS pennant to winning team (to keep). 60.20.1.1.33 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS designed medals to the members of the winning, second place, and in most cases, third place teams, or to those members placing first, second, or third in individual sports. 60.20.1.4 All-Canadians 60.20.1.5 Player/Athlete of the Year 60.20.1.6 Rookie of the Year 60.20.1.7 Coach of the Year 60.20.1.8 R.W. Pugh Fairplay Award 60.20.1.9 Student-Athlete Community Award 60.20.2 PRINCIPLES 60.20.2.1 To be nominated to receive a Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS award, the nominee or recipient must be free of any major disciplinary sanctions or suspensions from their university, Regional Association or Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS, in the academic year in question. In the case of student-athlete awards, the nominee must also be a CIS eligible student-athlete at the time of nomination. Note: Doping Infractions are addressed under 90.50.2 Penalties for Infractions. 60.20.2.2 Tie breaking procedures must be in place when a specific number of recipients is identified within the CIS Honours Policy. The procedure is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.3 All-Canadians 60.20.2.3.1 Team Sports There can be a 1st team and a 2nd team selected for each sport. The number of All-Canadians selected per team must be based on and can not exceed the number of athletes competing on the field of play as outlined in published Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS regulations. To win the national award the athlete must have been named to the All-Star team in their Sport Conference, if such a team is named and final voting must adhere to the conferences rank order.. Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.3.2 Individual Sports 60.20.2.3.2.1. Cross Country: The top 7 finalists in the mens and womens event at the National Championship will make up the 1st Team All-Canadians. The athletes finishing 8 to 14 in the mens and womens event at the National Championship will make up the 2nd Team All-Canadians. 60.20.2.3.2.2 Swimming and Track & Field: - The gold medallist in the mens and womens events (including relays) at the National Championship will make up the 1st Team All-Canadians. - The silver medallist in the mens and womens events (including relays) at the National Championship will make up the 2nd Team All-Canadians. - Note: Alternates that competed are also listed as All-Canadians. 60.20.2.3.2.3 Wrestling: - The gold medallist in the mens and womens events at the National Championship will make up the 1st Team All-Canadians. - The silver medallist in the mens and womens events at the National Championship will make up the 2nd Team All-Canadians. 60.20.2.4 Player of the Year (Team Sports) - A Player of the Year will be selected in all CISanadian Interuniversity Sport team sports. - Player of the Year nominees must be members of the CISanadian Interuniversity Sport 1st or 2nd All-Canadian 1st Team. Exception: In sports that select a positional All-Canadian Team, Player of the Year nominees do not have to be on either CIS All-Canadian teams but must have been a member of their conference All-Star team. - To win the national award the athlete must have won the player of the year award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.5 Athlete of the Year (Individual Sports) 60.20.2.5.1 Cross Country, Swimming and Wrestling: - An Athlete of the Year in both the mens and womens events will be selected annually. - Criteria for selection is based on an individuals performance at the National Championship. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.5.2 Track & Field: - An Athlete of the Year in a track event and an Athlete of the Year in a field event in both the mens and womens events will be selected annually. - To win the national award the athlete must have won the athlete of the year award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.6 Rookie of the Year 60.20.2.6.1 Team Sports - A Rookie of the Year will be selected in all Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS sports. - Nominated athletes must be 21 years of age or under as of September 1st in the academic year in question. - Nominated athletes must not have consumed any eligibility as defined by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS regulations. - To win the national award the athlete must have won the rookie of the year award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.6.2 Individual Sports 60.20.2.6.2.1 Track & Field and Wrestling: - A Rookie of the Year will be selected annually. - Nominated athletes must be 21 years of age or under as of September 1st in the academic year in question. - Nominated athletes must not have consumed any eligibility as defined by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS regulations. - To win the national award the athlete must have won the rookie of the year award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.6.2.2 Cross Country and Swimming: - A Rookie of the Year will be selected annually. - Nominated athletes must be 21 years of age or under as of September 1st in the academic year in question. - Nominated athletes must not have consumed any eligibility as defined by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS regulations. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.7 Coach of the Year 60.20.2.7.1 Team Sports - A Coach of the Year will be selected in all Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS team sports. - To win the national award the coach must have won the coach of the year award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. NOTE: Coaches Associations who wish to have nominations come forth from divisions may do so, however, they cannot select a Sport Conference Coach of the Year. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.7.2 Individual Sports 60.20.2.7.2.1 Cross Country, Swimming, Track & Field and Wrestling: - A Coach of the Year in both the mens and womens events will be selected annually. - Criteria for selection is based on the athletes/teams performance during the season including the National Championship. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.8 R. W. Pugh Fairplay Award - The R. W. Pugh Fairplay award will be presented annually at each National Championship. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.2.9 Student-Athlete Community Service Award - An award for outstanding achievement in athletics, academics and community involvement, will be awarded annually in all Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS sports. - To win the national award the athlete must have won that award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - The Coaches Association is requested to select a name to be associated with the award. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.20.3 RECOGNITION 60.20.3.1 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS shall provide consistent and meaningful recognition of to All-CanadiansChampionship award recipients. Details of the recognition program, and any cost sharing formulas will be communicated to Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS members prior to each championship season. 60.20.3.2 Each National Championship Host will determine whether or not they organize some form of banquet/event which celebrates the participating teams and All-Canadians inaward recipients in attendance. Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS encourages hosts to focus their celebrations primarily on the participating teams. 60.20.3.3 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS does not fund the non-participating All-Canadians and major award winners toaward recipients attendance at the National Championships. It is up to the hosts to determine what if anything they organize with respect to an event to present the All-CanadianChampionship Awards. It is up to Directors of Athletics to determine if they choose to send a non-participating All-Canadianaward recipient to the event or not. 60.20.4 PROCESS 60.20.4.1 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS will e-mail the awards selection process timelines to the chairperson for each Coaches Association one month before the first deadline. 60.20.4.2 Member nominations must include biographical information and a digital photograph, which must be forwarded to each Sport Conference awards representative and the Host of that specific National Championship. 60.20.4.3 Coaches Associations must provide the final list of award recipients to Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS within the timelines provided by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS, and must ensure that the athletes proper names (names used) are accurate and spelled correctly. 60.20.4.4 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS will e-mail the final list of award recipients to the Host on the same day that the list is received from the Coaches Association. 60.20.4.5 Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS will e-mail the following information to each institution on the same day (if possible) that the list is received from the Coaches Association: - name of the athlete and the award they have won - notice that the information is to remain confidential until the time of the announcement - date of banquet/awards show - embargo time - institutions are instructed to contact the Host - notice that Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS does not cover the cost of non-participating award recipients attending the championship - sample biography required for major award winners submissions 60.20.4.6 Institutions to confirm the attendance of their non-participating award recipients with the Championship Host. 60.20.4.7 The Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Communications department will prepare a release and circulate it to national media the day of the banquet/awards ceremony. A copy of the release will also be posted on the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Web site and circulated to membership. Policies and Procedures 60 Honours Policy Number: 60.30 Name: Optional Championship Awards Origin: Sport Committee Approved: June 1998 Approval Process: Board of Directors Revision Date(s): June 2003, April 2004, June 2007 60.30.1 GENERAL The Coaches Associations may choose to present additional awards at National Championships. Awards proposals from Coaches Associations must include a rationale for the award, selection process and criteria. All proposals will be forwarded to Program Committee for approval. New awards must also demonstrate longevity to presenting the award on an annual basis. The Coaches Association, Host, or sponsor must donate any gift and/or award for presentation. It should be noted that although a Host may choose to include the purchase of these awards in their bid package, they are not required to provide the awards as part of their hosting responsibilities. The procedure is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.30.2.3 Tournament MVP - Selection based on the athletes performance at the National Championship. - Must be a member of the Tournament All-Star team, if such a team exists. 60.30.2.4 Tournament All-Stars - Selection based on the athletes performance at the National Championship. - Total number of All-Stars must be based on and cannot exceed the number of athletes competing on the field of play as outlined in published Canadian Interuniversity Sport CIS regulations. 60.30.2.5 All-Rookie Team - Selection based on season performance. - Nominated athletes must be 21 years of age or under as of September 1st in the academic year in question. - Nominated athletes must not have consumed any eligibility as defined by CIS regulations. - Must have been a Rookie of the Year nominee or a member of the All-Rookie Team in their Sport Conference, if such a team is named from their respective Sport Conference and final voting must adhere to the conferences rank order. 60.30.2.6 Coaching Service Awards - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. 60.30.2.7 Defensive/Offensive Player of the Year - Nominees must be Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS All-Canadians. - To win a national award the athlete must have won the award in their Sport Conference, if such an award exists. - Final selection process is at the discretion of the Coaches Association. Policies and Procedures 60 Honours Policy Number: 60.50.40 Name: Academic All-Canadians and Academic All-Canadian Celebration Origin: Board of Directors Approved: June 1998 Approval Process: Board of Directors Revision Date(s): June 2001, August 2002, August, 2003, April 2004, June 2005 60.40.1 ACADEMIC ALL-CANADIANS 60.40.1.1 General Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS athletes may be honored by being named "Academic All-Canadian" and listed on the "Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Honor Roll". The Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office will release the honor roll to the media and a copy will be circulated to all university Directors of Athletics who are then responsible to circulate the information to their coaches and Sports Information Directors to ensure proper public recognition. 60.40.1.2 Criteria 60.40.1.2.1 To be nominated to receive a Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS award, the nominee or recipient must be a Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS eligible student-athlete at the time of nomination or receipt, and be free of any major disciplinary sanctions or suspensions from their university, Regional Association or Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS, in the academic year in question. Note: Doping Infractions are addressed under 90.50.2 Penalties for Infractions. 60.40.1.2.2 The athlete must have been enrolled as a student-athlete, as determined by their institution (minimum 18 credit hours as per Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS regulations). 60.40.1.2.3 The athlete must have received a September to August 31 grade point average, which takes into consideration every course the athlete was registered in during that period, equivalent to an A- or 80% or better. 60.40.1.2.4 The athlete must have been a member of the institution's Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS varsity team(s) and have used a year of eligibility for that sport. 60.40.1.2.5 There is no limit to the number of athletes that can be nominated by one institution. 60.40.1.2.6 The Registrar or designate must sign the Nomination Summary Form. 60.40.1.2.7 For athletes enrolled in programs where there is a pass/fail marking scheme an academic letter of reference is required from the Dean or designate attesting to the athlete's academic credibility. 60.40.1.3 Selection Process The Nomination Summary Form must be submitted to the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office by the deadline date designated by the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office on a yearly basis (additional information, i.e. photographs may be requested from time to time). 60.40.2 TOP 8 ACADEMIC ALL-CANADIANS 60.40.2.1 Selection Process 60.40.2.1.1 Every institution will be asked to nominate one male and one female Academic All-Canadian to their Regional Association president/office. 60.40.2.1.2 Each Regional Association will choose one male and one female nominee to be submitted to the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office by the deadline date designated on a yearly basis using the appropriate nomination form (60.40.2.2). 60.40.2.1.3 All nominees must first have met all criteria outlined in 60.40.1.2 60.40.2.1.43 All eight athletes will be honored in some fashion by CIS. 60.40.2.1.5 For the purpose of Regional Association selections the intent is to honour student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. Incentive and financial assistance will be awarded for Canadian university athletes to attend Canadian graduate schools. 60.50.1.2 There will be one male and one female winner. Each winner will receive a graduate school scholarship or equivalent financial support to offset expenses other than tuition which relate to attending a Canadian post graduate program doctorate, masters degree, first professional degree, or graduate level certificate and diploma (as classified by AUCC)and a trophy. Each Regional Association winner will receive a commemorative gift as the outstanding athlete for their Regional Association. 60.50.2 The Canadian Athletic Foundation 60.50.2.1 The Canadian Athletic Foundation is a non-profit Foundation established for the express purpose of administering the Awards and protecting the integrity of the selection process. The Board of Trustees has members from cities across the country whothat are committed to this endeavour and to ensuring that Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS athletes receive the recognition they so richly deserve. 60.50.3 SELECTION PROCESS 60.50.3.1 The first round of selections will be decided by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS member institutions who forward to their Regional Association the name of their male and female nominees. Member Institutions shall only nominate candidates who are available to attend the BLG Awards in Calgary for a 2 day period in for a two daytwo-day period in late April/early May. late April/early May. 60.50.3.2 Each Regional Association will then choose its male and female representatives. 60.50.3.3 All nominations shall be submitted on the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS forms designed for this purpose. Additional information which will enhance the nomination can be included. 60.50.3.4 The Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office will compile the list of nominees and forward the list to the Canadian Athletic Foundation. 60.50.3.5 The Board of Trustees of the Canadian Athletic Foundation will consider the nominations and select the winners. 60.50.4 DEADLINES 60.50.4.1 Calls for nominations will be circulated by the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office each year. 60.50.4.2 Institutions must forward their nominations to their Regional Association by a date to be determined annually by the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office. 60.50.4.3 All Regional Association nominations must be received by the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office no later than 5 days following the Regional Association deadline. This material should be submitted electronically. 60.50.4.4 A package including nominations, photographs and biographies will be forwarded to the Board of Trustees upon receipt by the Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office. 60.50.5 ELIGIBILITY 60.50.5.1 To be eligible for the award, nominees must: a) Have participated in a sport recognized by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS and be in at least their 2nd year of Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS eligibility. b) Be in a course of study leading to their first undergraduate degree or graduate program. (minimum second year). c) Be the institution "Athlete of the Year". If the athlete(s) did not participate in a sport offered by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS, the name of the runner up who did participate in a sport offered by Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS would be submitted. d) No athlete may win the award twice. e) Be available to attend the BLG Awards in CalgaryTorontoCalgary on April 265th & 276th, 200910 and in Vancouver on May 15, 16, 2011 on April 30, 2007 (Arrive in Calgary on April 29, depart on May 1).. 60.50.5.2 All nominees must attend the awards ceremonies. 60.50.6 SELECTION CRITERIA The Board of Trustees will select the male and female "Athlete of the Year" based on athletic accomplishment, outstanding sportsmanship and leadership ability (weighted accordingly in this order). The award is based on athletic achievements in the respective season and not the results of past seasons. Previous years achievement, athletic achievement external to CIS and academic standing may be used as tie breakers. 60.50.7 Procedure for Obtaining the Scholarship 60.50.7.1 The scholarship must be used within 5 (five) years of completion of the first degree or unlessor unless due to extenuating circumstances the Board of Trustees approves an extension request. 60.50.7.2 Upon acceptance into post-graduate studies at a Canadian University, the University forwards a letter to The Canadian Athletic Foundation, 1000 Canterra Tower, 400 Third Avenue S.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2P 4H2 to the attention of Doug Mitchell, confirming the athlete's enrollment in the program. The funds will then be forwarded directly to the recipient. 60.50.7.3 If at any time during the first academic year of post-graduate studies, the Award recipient withdraws from the program, the funds will be returned directly to the Canadian Athletic Foundation. The Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Office will circulate a nomination form for all Special Awards to each Member institutions, and nominations must be supported by a minimum of two Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS Members. 60.60.2 SPORTS HALL OF FAME The Canadian Interuniversity SportCIS shall nominate a candidate (when deemed worthy) to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. 60.60.3 Fred Sgambati Media Award 60.60.3.1 General Presented to a member of the news media who has made a major contribution to the development and growth of Canadian university sport. Fred Sgambati was a well respected reporter/broadcaster who was a great supporter of university athletics in Canada. A former University of Toronto athlete and university football official, Fred Sgambati was the radio voice of the College Bowl (now the Vanier Cup) for its first thirteen years. 60.60.3.2 Selection Process 60.60.3.2.1 The call for nominations shall go out 120 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. 60.60.3.2.2 Only one nomination per Regional Association will be accepted. Such awards shall be named after outstanding individuals who exemplify the selection criteria of the award. The person who the honour is named after may be nomination selected as the inaugural recipient of the honour. 60.70.2.3 NAMING OF CIS HONOURS Members and/or committees may submit at any time to the Board of Directors selection criteria for the establishment of new awards. Proposals for the creation of an honour, which is not sport specific in nature, shall include (i) the purpose of the award, (ii) the selection criteria, and (iii) selection process. The proposals shall be reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors. Submissions may also include a recommendation for naming of the award after a distinguished individual.
