Lady Vees Swimmers Set Sights on OUA Championships

SUDBURY, Ont.  From February 11 to 13, the Laurentian Lady Vees will be in action at the Ontario University Swimming Championships at Brock University. The Lady Vees are 4 -3 in dual meet competition this season with wins over Brock, Laurier, Waterloo and York and loses to Toronto, McMaster and Guelph. The Lady Vees also placed third at the Eynon Divisional Championships this past November at Laurentian University.

The Lady Vees are peaking at the right time and hope they can surprise some on-lookers in St. Catharine's this weekend. Veterans Leila Angrand (Sudbury, Ont.), Lauren Coughtry (Waverly, N.S.), Courtney Hicks (Burlington, Ont.), Elisha James (Blackstock, Ont.), Alicia Kaye (Pickering, Ont.), Stephanie Kuhn (Timmins, Ont.), Terena Lawrie (Whitby, Ont.), Anna Lech (Kanata, Ont.), Aina Lorbergs (Toronto), Sarah Mailloux (Sudbury), Ashley Nardella (Brampton, Ont.), Erin O'Neill (Sudbury), Tiffany Paul (Sudbury), Chantal Quirion (Timmins), Melissa Rydahl (Mississauga, Ont.), and Jaimie Scobie (Newmarket, Ont.) will look to lead rookie Dominique Lafleur (Sturgeon Falls, Ont.) and Amanda Burchert (Kemptville, Ont.).

"The energy is high at this meet and it can be very emotionally draining for the rookies" said head coach Phil Parker. "The vets will lead by example and show the rookies when to turn it on and turn it off".

Second year swimmer Stephanie Kuhn will be pushing to hit the medal podium in the 100 FL, 50 FL, 100 FR in a very tough OUA women's field this year. Stephanie will be battling the likes of Jen Porenta, Kate Davis, Orlagh O'Kelly and Brittany Scott, all members of U of T. Anna Lech will also be looking to keep pace for a possible medal finish in the 50 FL. With just about each university fielding a full 18 roster compliment on the women's side, the competition will be fast and furious. The Lady Vees have 3 CIS qualifiers already with hopes of more to come after the weekend's races.

There will be no question that Toronto will walk away with the overall team gold on the women's side but the rest of the spots are up for grabs. The Lady Vees will be looking to crack the top 5 in the OUA.

Coach Parker is excited for the Conference Championships and feels the swimmers will make a solid impact this weekend at Brock. "They have worked very hard in training all year and are getting more and more mentally prepared for the final task at hand" said Parker. "They have a great deal of confidence in one another and it is quite inspiring for a coach to see the teams coming together just at the right time."

Competition time is Friday, Saturday and Sunday with prelims in the morning/early afternoon and finals running
