Ward, a third-year management student from Town of Mt. Royal, Que., was named tournament MVP at the CIS womens hockey championship in Antigonish, N.S., after she led the top-seeded Martlets to their second straight national title. The five-foot-six defender finished the competition with three assists in three games and led a defensive unit that allowed a tournament-low three goals as McGill edged No.3-Manitoba 2-1 in overtime on opening day, outscored No.5-StFX 5-1 in its second pool-play duel and beat No.2-Wilfrid Laurier 3-1 in the gold-medal final. A former CIS rookie of the year and a first-team all-Canadian each of her three seasons at McGill, Ward was announced last week as a member of the Team Canada roster for the upcoming IIHF world championship in Finland (April 4-12). Hockey players Kathy Desjardins of Moncton, Lauren Barch of Wilfrid Laurier and Addie Miles of Manitoba were also nominated for the womens award. Verge, a third-year commerce student from Fall River, N.S., was named MVP of the best-of-three AUS mens hockey final after he helped the Huskies upset the defending champion UNB Varsity Reds two games to one to capture their first conference title since 2001-02. The six-foot, 180-pound goaltender earned player-of-the-game honours in the third and decisive match as Saint Marys managed a 5-1 road win in front of a sell-out UNB crowd of 3,762 despite being outshot 28-18. Verge and the Huskies are seeded No. 2 going into this weeks CIS University Cup championship in Thunder Bay, Ont. (March 26-29). Alberta netminder Aaron Sorochan was also in the running. Ward, une tudiante de troisime anne en management originaire de Ville Mont-Royal, Qu., a t choisie joueuse par excellence du championnat fminin de hockey de SIC disput Antigonish, N.-., aprs avoir men les Martlets, favorites du tournoi, un deuxime titre canadien conscutif. La dfenseure de 56 a rcolt trois passes en trois parties et sest avre la pierre angulaire dune unit dfensive qui na accord que trois buts alors que McGill disposait du Manitoba (No. 3) par 2-1 en prolongation en ouverture du championnat, de StFX (No. 5) par 5-1 lors de son deuxime match de la ronde prliminaire et de Wilfrid Laurier (No. 2) par 3-1 en finale.
