Chartrand, a first-year physical education student from Lac Nominingue, Que. was named tournament MVP at the CIS womens hockey championship in Ottawa after leading the top-seeded Martlets to their first national title. The towering five-foot-10 rearguard was part of the second unit in championship history to hold the opposition off the scoreboard for the entire tournament as McGill prevailed 6-0 over No.5-Manitoba, 3-0 over No.4-StFX and 2-0 over No.3-Laurier, and also led the tourney in scoring with two goals and four assists, including game-winning tallies in the Martlets final two wins. Chartrand has represented Canada at past world championships. StFX hockey player Brayden Ferguson and track and field athletes Lindsay Carson of Guelph and Janine Polischuk of Regina were also nominated for the womens award. Effah, a second-year communications student from Calgary was named male MVP at the CIS track and field championships in Montreal after claiming four gold medals and leading the Dinos to a second-place finish in the mens team standings, a mere three points behind national champion Guelph. The sophomore speedster, who had already been chosen CIS male athlete of the year in track events prior to Nationals, won individual gold in both the 60-metre and 300m and lifted the Dinos to victory in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays, including a time of 3:14.12 in the latter race that bettered a 15-year-old CIS meet record. Saint Marys basketball player Mark McLaughlin, Laval track and field athlete Tommy Lecours and Carleton basketball player Aaron Doornekamp were the other male nominees. Chartrand, une tudiante de premire anne en ducation physique originaire de Lac Nominingue, Qu., a t nomme joueuse par excellence du tournoi au championnat fminin de hockey de SIC qui se droulait Ottawa aprs avoir men les Martlets, tablies favorites de la comptition, la conqute dun premier titre national. Larrire de 510 sest avre la pierre angulaire dune unit dfensive qui est devenue la deuxime de lhistoire du championnat naccorder aucun but, les Martlets lemportant par 6-0 sur Manitoba, 3-0 sur StFX et 2-0 sur Laurier, en plus de terminer au premier rang des marqueuses avec une rcolte de deux buts et quatre passes, incluant les buts gagnants lors des deux dernires victoires de McGill. Chartrand a dj reprsent le Canada au championnat du monde. Le marchand de vitesse, nomm athlte masculin de lanne de SIC dans les preuves de piste avant le dbut de la comptition, a remport les preuves individuelles du 60 mtres et du 300m en plus de mener les Dinos la victoire aux relais 4x200m et 4x400m, incluant un recontre des championnats dans cette dernire course.
