ࡱ> AC@3 {bjbj5G5G $2W-W-{l $ $( p $ f      Z::  0h ^T:^$0:.F(VERSION FRANAISE CI-DESSOUS) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CIS athletes of the week Swimmers Nell, Szoo honoured Feb. 11, 2009 OTTAWA (CIS) Western Ontario swimmer Hayley Nell and Laval swimmer Adam Szoo are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending February 8, 2009. Nell, a second-year sciences student from London, Ont., was named female swimmer of the meet at the OUA championships held at the University of Ottawa after she tallied six gold medals, set an OUA record in the 100-metre freestyle and led the Mustang women to their first conference banner since 1985-86. The super sophomore, who was chosen swimmer of the meet for the second straight year, touched the wall in 55.36 seconds on Saturday night to set the new OUA standard in the 100 free and also captured gold in the 50 free, 200 free, 200 back, and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 freestyle relays. Nell will represent Western and the OUA at the CIS championships in Vancouver from February 19-21. Dalhousie swimmer Kristen Vandenberg, Laval swimmer Myriam Plante and Victoria basketball player Kayla Dykstra were also nominated for the womens award. Szoo, a third-year sociology student from Calgary was chosen male swimmer of the meet at the QSSF championships held at McGill University after he amassed six medals, including five golds, and guided the Rouge et Or men to the team title. The 20-year-old junior was crowned individual champion in the 100-metre freestyle, 200 free and 50 breast, led the Laval relays to victory in the 4 x 100 free and 4 x 50 medley, and to a second-place finish in the 4 x 50 free. Szoo will travel to UBC next week for the CIS championships. Dalhousie swimmer Bryce Tung, Toronto swimmer Curtis Samuel and Calgary basketball player Henry Bekkering were the other male nominees.
