Morningstar, a first-year open studies student from Regina, was named Canada West rookie of the year after she claimed six gold medals and one silver in seven races, set six meet records and led the U of C women to the team banner at the conference swimming championships held in Victoria. The 19-year-old freshman won individual gold in the 50 and 100-metre freestyle and in the 200 medley, helped the Dinos sweep the 4 x 100 free, 4 x 200 free and 4 x 100 medley relays, and finished .81 second behind teammate Breanna Hendriks in the 200 free, with both swimmers going under the old Canada West championship mark. Morningstar represented Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she reached the finals as part of the 4 x 100 medley (7th) and 4 x 100 freestyle (8th) relays. Cape Breton basketball player Kelsey Hodgson, Montreal volleyball player Laetitia Tchoualack and Toronto basketball player Nicki Shutz were also nominated for the womens award. Bakovic, a third-year business management student from Toronto, amassed 69 points and 25 rebounds to lead the 9-6 Rams to victories over York and Laurentian, giving the team its best win tally since a 14-8 campaign in 2001-02. The 6-foot-8 forward had a 34-point, 16-rebound double-double in a 103-94 defeat of the Lions on Friday, then followed up with a 35-point, nine-board effort in a 104-83 win over the Voyageurs on Saturday. Bakovic currently leads the nation with 27.67 points per game and ranks fifth in the country and second in the OUA with 9.93 rebounds per outing. UPEI basketball player Andrew Black, McGill basketball player Moustafa El Zanaty and UBC swimmer Scott Dickens were the other male nominees. Morningstar, une tudiante de premire anne en tudes libres originaire de Regina, a t nomme recrue de lanne de Canada-Ouest aprs quelle eut rcolt six mdailles dor et une dargent, tabli six records de rencontre et aid la formation fminine de Calgary remporter la bannire par quipe lors des championnats de natation de la confrence qui se droulait Victoria. La recrue ge de 19 ans a dcroch lor aux 50 et 100 mtres libre et au 200 mtres quatre nages, a men les Dinos la victoire lors des relais 4 x 100 et 4 x 200 libre et 4 x 100 quatre nages, puis a termin .81 seconde derrire sa coquipire Breanna Hendriks au 200 libre individuel, les deux nageuses passant sous lancienne marque des championnats. Morningstar a reprsent le Canada lors des Jeux olympique dt de 2008 Pkin, l o elle a atteint les finales des relais 4 x 100 quatre nages (7e) et 4 x 100 libre (8e).
